New Survey Examines Consumers Candy Consumption Habits

June is National Candy month and what better way to celebrate than satisfying your sweet tooth with your favourite treat. Do you reach for chocolate or chewy sweet candy? How many times a week do you get a candy fix? Wonder how you compare to other Canadians?

Contract Testing recently conducted an extensive survey on consumer candy preferences with over 1000 participants from across Canada.

Here are some of the interesting findings and insights from this survey:

Canadians prefer chocolate
It is hard to pick favourites when it comes to candy but 58 per cent of Canadians prefer chocolate to sweet candy.

A sweet-trifecta
There are dozens of choices when it comes to sweet candy but gummi candy is a the clear winner (39%), followed by sour candy (21%) and hard candy (14%). The least popular candies include jelly candy (7%), lollipops (4%) and rock candy (1%).

Candy Convenience
When it comes to buying candy more than three-quarters of Canadians make purchases at big box stores while more than half frequent specialty candy stores. Discount stores are a close third with 48%.

Mid-day pick-me-up
Canadians are most likely to eat candy as a mid-day snack with 57% having a sweet treat at this time. This is followed by dessert after a meal (26%), followed by before bed (8%) – don’t forget to brush your teeth if you fall in this category!

Candy is a regular treat
More than 40% of Canadians eat candy often (3 times a week), 28% eat it every day and 23% eat it sometimes. Only 4% of Canadians eat it just a few times a year.
