NEW SURVEY FINDS THAT CONSUMERS LOVE TO COOL DOWN WITH ICE CREAM
JULY 2015
July is National ice cream month and what better way to cool down than a deliciously cool ice cream treat.
Ever wonder what the most popular flavour of ice cream is? Classic vanilla or minty chocolate? Where does frozen yogurt fall on the scale?
Contract Testing recently conducted an extensive survey on consumer ice cream preferences with over 1000 participants from across Canada and the United States
Here are some of the interesting findings and insights from this survey:
Consumers prefer the creamy taste of ice cream.
More than 70% of Canadians and Americans prefer ice cream over frozen yogurt.
It is hard to pick a favourite flavour.
Canadians and Americans are all over the board when it comes to their favourite ice cream flavour. Chocolate reigns supreme in Canada (19%) while Mint Chocolate takes the crown in the US (18%). Other favourites in both countries include Cookies N’ Cream (15%), Vanilla (14%) and Butter Pecan (9%).
It’s all about the toppings.
Canadian and American consumers are divided when it comes to how they like to top their ice cream. Chopped nuts are the favourite in Canada (25%) while Americans reach for assorted syrups (24%). Whipped cream, a classic ice cream topping is popular in the US (18%) while only 11% of Canadians add it to their sundae.
Getting ice cream is an occasion.
Almost half of Americans and Canadians prefer to purchase ice cream at a speciality shop or ice cream parlour, making it an event. When it comes to stocking their freezers, 36% visit big box stores while 4% stick to discount stores.
Any time is ice cream time!
Canadians are more likely than Americans to eat ice cream every day (14% vs 7%) while Americans are slightly more likely to eat it three times a week (43% vs 41%). Ice cream is a universal treat with less than 1% of Americans and Canadians never enjoying a scoop.
